Doom

I have been thinking about doom lately.  I guess it is because I read an article about the Dooms day vault in Norway.  A high security four door vault has been built in the arctic tundra of Norway on a mountain, surrounded by man eating polar bears.  In this vault we are keeping seeds from all over the world so that if “doom” occurs we can reseed the world.  Of course to do this you will simply need to do the following:

1. Survive Doom.

2. Know of the vault.

3. Travel to Europe from wherever you are.

4. Travel to Norway.

5. Travel to the arctic tundra.

6. Survive polar bear attack.

7. Climb mountain.

8. Break into multi-door high facility vault.

9.  Know where the seeds that provide food are kept.

10. Climb down mountain.

11. Survive second polar bear attack.

12. Travel to land that will support plant growth.

13. Survive until planting season (pray it isn’t the fall)

14. Till the soil.

15. Protect the plants from insects, other migrant people, animals, and the weather.

16. Harvest enough plant material to make it to spring.

17. Store material so that it does not rot.

Uhhh. This vault thing isn’t really all that well thought out.   That is the problem with most huge plans.  Know one wants to look at the unintended consequences of them.

For example, we now have government motors, government health care and soon to be government carbon cops.  What does this mean for a small company?  Well, if you are a small company that makes the air filter in a car.  Lets say you higher 35 people.  You make the air filter for Ford rangers.  Well, that means your main competition is the Federal government who builds Chevy. So, like Toyota, you suddenly find yourself constantly called before Congress to explain why you didn’t tell people about why your filter was failing in less than 1% of Ford Rangers.  You survive this and people are buying Fords because most people think GMs cars suck because they are made by the Government.  So great, ford wants to increase orders.  Woo hoo, you go to higher 15 more people.  But you discover that Government health care requires you to buy them all health insurance or be fined.  You do the math and discover that you would be putting the company in risk of bankruptcy by taking on health insurance.  So you decide to make do with 10 more people.  This way you don’t have to lay off or close down.  Only then the EPA says hey, you use several million pounds of carbon a year to make that filter that filters several billion pounds of carbon out of the air.  So you have to buy a million pounds of carbon offsets.  Well, then you say, I can’t afford that unless I lay off ten people so you do.  So now you have 35 people trying to keep up with 50 peoples worth of orders.  So your quality suffers and Ford starts getting annoyed with your slow turn around time.  So they find this company out of Uganda who will make the filter for a tenth of the price and always on time.  So Ford cancels the contract and imports the filter.  That means you end up closing your doors and your people are no longer working.  Your kid can’t go to college because you can’t afford it.  So your kid can’t get a job either.  Now everyone who worked for you, you and all those families kids are on welfare, with free health insurance…… except there are no doctors to go to because none of them are getting paid.   So a massive pandemic hits our now poverty stricken nation with no health care system.  Additionally our crops are dying because the Ugandans don’t care about carbon emissions and do not filter any of them while making the filter that you don’t make anymore.  You survive the acid rains to learn that the only way you can keep your family alive is if you travel to Norway and score some sweet corn seeds.  I don’t know maybe we can rethink this Hope and Change thing.
